Les Mars Hotel

Splendid as always.

The sixteen room, 3 story, boutique hotel is luxurious, filled with elegant antiques.

Normally, I like to have an unobstructed view, and you won’t get that here, since the hotel is in town.

However, it is conventiently located next door to Michelin 2 Star Restaurant Cyrus, 2 blocks away from Charlie Palmer’s excellent restaurant Dry Creek Kitchen, and a few doors away from the delicious Costeaux bakery.

The room with its high ceilings and windows on two sides was immaculate and well kept-up.

I loved the beautiful armoire, the gas fireplace that turns on by switch, and the large flat screen television that rose almost silently from the antique cabinet.

High Speed internet was an amenity, and there is a nice desk beside the bed where you can set up your laptop and work.

A 31 fluid ounce bottle of Voss water with a glass decanter on a silver tray linen with a linen doily was an amenity at turndown, and so was a 2 piece box of wonderful Le Belge chocolates!

The massive California King sized 4 poster bed with lots of pouffy pillows and silky-soft sheets was incredibly comfortable.

Soundproofing between the rooms was noiseless.

However, there is construction going on at a large building site next door, located at the corner of North & Foss.

They have dug the footings but not yet begun framing, and I would expect another 9 – 12 months of possible noise from this during the weekdays.

They are also adjacent to a delivery area, and across the street maybe 100 feet away is a trash collection area. So you might hear some brief noise from these areas when the trucks are working.

The gray and white marble bathroom with its immediate hot water, soaking tub, large shower, single sink and Bulgari amenities is lovely.

Breakfast was brought to the room on a silver tray, and removed promptly on request.

Housekeeping is prompt and spotless, both at morning tidy-up and at evening turn down.

Service otherwise was polite and efficient without being in any way warm or caring, in my personal opinion.
Sort of left me with the impression that they really diidn’t care if you were a happy guest or not.
No apologies when things went wrong, no real concern if they weren’t right.

The concierge gave me the wrong phone number for NEXT DOOR Cyrus Restaurant. And made no effort to make the phone call himself, telling me that I could do it.
Yes, I can. But isn’t that what a concierge is about – being helpful?

I asked for two plastic laundry bags for dirty laundry, and got only one, and so had to ask again.
He acted like he was being inconvenienced. But he was the one who hadn’t paid attention the first time.

There was a horrific ongoing noise one night that kept me awake from 3:00 a.m. until 5:00 a.m.
The young man at the desk came upstairs, and said he thought it was coming from somewhere in town.
He offered to try to move me to a nearby room that might be quieter, but none were.
He called two nearby hotels, and they also had noise complaints from guests about this.
He was not able to locate the source of the noise to ask them to cease making the racket, and didn’t seem in the least bit apologetic or sorry that one of his guests was unable to sleep.
Nor did anyone the next day express any genuine regret that my experience at the hotel might have been so unpleasantly disturbed.

Aside from these issues, Les Mars Hotel is definitely the loveliest small hotel in Healdsburg, and from that standpoint is a property Relais & Chateaux can be proud of.

What a GORGEOUS property! Love the high ceilings and that to-die-for bathroom. I got to the very end and saw “Relais & Chateaux” and then was like, AHA, *that* is why it’s so nice! I’ve never yet seen a property of theirs that wasn’t absolutely beautiful.

It’s a shame about the construction, but some things you can’t change. Still, it would definitely be enough to make me think twice, especially for leisure as opposed to business travel, so go that you noted it.

I just love your hotel reviews. Keep ‘em up, please! :-)
