Kitchen and Bath Stuff

Posted by Cinderella in Building The Castle

We went shopping for bathtubs yesterday.
There are some wonderful showrooms out there now, sort of Home Depot sized, and just for kitchen and bath items. Too fun!
I’d rather do this than shop for clothes. Seriously. Books and house stuff rattle my cage.

Found an EXTREMELY comfortable acrylic tub by Hyrdo Systems with an in-line heater called ‘Debra’ for the two upstairs guest bathrooms (the picture for this post).

The arms rests are really cool, at just the right height and thickness, and the slope of the back rest just feels good.

Yes, I sat in it with all of my clothes on while we were in the showroom.
I mean, how can you pick a bathtub just by looking? You can’t, not if you want to make sure you’ll like it when you get it home. In fact, you should love your bathtubs. It’s a rule somewhere in the women’s handbook of life.

So I climbed in about 12 different tubs.
People were looking at me like I was crazy. Do I care? No.
I think THEY are crazy NOT to try out something so expensive first.

A comfortable ADA compliant one with a rising wall called by Kohler called ‘Elevance’ for the downstairs guest suite (which fills up in 4 minutes if you have a 3/4″ supply valve & piping),

And of course, the sybaritic vanishing edge delight from Kohler called ‘Sok’ for the master suite.
I love how the water spills over all four edges, and stays hot constantly so you never have to fiddle with the taps.

It’s a huge relief to be able to check the boxes off one by one for what we will need in the house.

The refrigerator and freezer issue got solved also yesterday because all of the half-and-half combinations just didn’t visually float my boat.
So it’s definitely going to be a SubZero full 36″ refrigerator, and a Subzero full 36″ freezer.
The interior design lady, Susan, can pick how the doors will look.

The stovetop and the 30″ side-by-side double ovens will be from Thermador.
I put the ovens at waist height so they are easy to see in, and to open, Then I design it with a 5’0″ long and 17″ high bookcase above the ovens, with cookbooks on it. Perfect!

The microwave? I don’t really care, except I like it to be on a countertop. I’ve seen the in-drawer models, but am not really sold on them yet.

I do however love the in-drawer thing for soft drinks.

The washer and dryer will be Miele super Capacity. Why did you pick that brand, you ask?
Uhmmmmm, because Steve Jobs said they were the best, and he was so picky that I trust that as a recommendation.
But otherwise, honestly, I would have probably gone with Whirlpool’s Front Load washer & dryer.

What kitchen or bath things do YOU drool over? Is there something you just HAVE to have on your list?

Wow, I LOVE that tub!! And I’d have totally gotten into them — at least if I could, that is. It’s been several years now since I’ve had an actual soaking bath. I have a shower chair & that’s how I get all of mine. It gets old!

So glad to see that this is all coming together for you. And that green color? Yeah, that’s just my jealousy oozing through the screen. ;-P

LOL, you’re not alone with a bathtub fetish, have to include mattresses and toilets too :)

Make sure you get a porcelain tub, and not the acrylic versions….

      Dear YW,
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the double acrylic tubs from Hydro Systems. I know porcelain is supposed to be better, but these have in-line heaters, so they don’t ever get cold, and they are SO comfortable!

Havn’t found a mattress yet I love, since I cannot stand the smell of the Tempurpedic anymore now that they douse so much flame retardent on them and it off-gasses for years, which isn’t good for your health.
It seems that a fairly hard basic 100% cotton mattress, with a 2″ featherbed does just the trick for a glorious night’s sleep.

My favorite toilet so far is the Toto Neorest 550. That heated seat is great!

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITES? SHARE, YW, SHARE!:)

I had no idea there was so much to choose from. You are going to live in the Taj Mahal!

Good Monday to you, dear Merry.
There are so many choices, it is amazing! It can get a bit overwhelming/confusing frankly, trying to figure out what will work with what style wise.
And then you also have to take into consideration, effective function, and then comfort levels too.

Some tubs LOOK great but are uncomfortable to sit in for your neck or back.
Some soaking tubs are very deep/high, and slippery to get out of, and there is no place to put a grab bar to help you get up and out safely.
You have to make sure in the planning stages that your supply lines are AT least 3/4″, and even better would be 1″, so your tub fills up quickly.

It’ll be an east coast nantucket style version of the Taj Mahl, at least:)

I’m not a fancy kind of gal.

Matter of fact, I’m pretty simple. As more and more time goes by, I think I should have lived about 25 years before my time when things were much more basic.

      Dear WON,
The good thing is, you can always choose simple and yet it can function beautifully as well.
Remember if you lived that long ago, you’d also forgo basic comforts we now take for granted. It’s always a trade-off.
I’d have liked the absence of planes, trains, cars, smog and pollution and even computers.
I’d have greatly missed air-conditioning, indoor plumbing, hot showers and screens on windows.

I think it’s so awesome that you actually got into the tubs to try them out, haha. All this stuff that you picked out sounds absolutely fabulous. You’re going to have one awesome house!

That’s a whole lotta progress! Good for you, being smart and trying everything out. Who cares what others think? YOU are the informed one:)

    Sending hugs…
